SWAMC seeks RPO designation for regional transportation planning

The Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference (SWAMC) is pursuing designation as a Regional Planning Organization (RPO) in partnership with the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF).

RPOs are designed to strengthen regional collaboration on transportation planning and infrastructure investment. By becoming an RPO, SWAMC will help ensure that the unique needs of Southwest Alaska communities are better represented in statewide transportation decisions.

In March, SWAMC members passed Resolution 2026-03-01 affirming the intention to seek RPO status. Since that time, SWAMC and DOT&PF have begun work on the RPO agreement.

This effort will bring together local governments, Tribal entities, and transportation stakeholders to identify priorities, improve coordination, and support long-term, community-driven solutions. From ports and roads to aviation and marine access, the RPO framework provides a structured way to advocate for critical infrastructure that supports economic development and quality of life across the region.

As part of this process, SWAMC will work with regional partners to establish a representative board that will guide priorities and provide input on transportation planning efforts. We are currently accepting notices of interest for prospective board members (Submit Notice of Interest).

SWAMC looks forward to engaging communities and partners throughout this process and will share opportunities for involvement in the coming months.
